Starting in 1950, 41 wooden signs reading “Welcome to Colorful Colorado” were placed on major roads leading into the state at border crossings to greet road-tripping travelers about to enter a beautiful mountain landscape. The signs are still there.
Instead of depicting vistas of snow-capped peaks and majestic scenes of Colorado’s flora and fauna, this series depicts urban Colorado, concrete Colorado. The images were photographed in and around Downtown Denver and present a confined and fictionalized metropolitan landscape based on candid images taken from reality.
